Prepare for the worst: serious thunderstorm warning for Sunday afternoon

SA Weather Service issues level 4 warning for a powerful storm that will ravage KZN

SEVERE STORMS are forecast, with widespread showers and thundershowers expected over Zululand this afternoon (Sunday) after the SA Weather Service (SAWS) issued a level 4 warning for torrential rains, damaging winds and intense lightning in places.

The warning is expected from 3pm until 11pm.

The affected area impacts various regions in KZN, including Richards Bay, Empangeni, eSikhaleni, Mtunzini and Ngwelezana, as well as Durban, Pietermaritzburg and Port Shepstone.

Forecasters are predicting winds of up to 100 km/h, gusting to 120 km/h, with excessive lightning that may lead to power outages and fires.

Large hail could cause damage to crops, vehicles, and infrastructure, while heavy downpours exceeding 40mm may result in flash flooding.

The Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (COGTA) has placed its disaster teams on high alert.

Residents are warned to monitor weather updates and follow evacuation instructions from authorities; avoid travel unless absolutely necessary; stay indoors during storms, and avoid windows and exterior walls.

“Heed weather warnings and prioritise your safety,” urged MEC Reverend Thulasizwe Buthelezi.

“Stay informed through reliable weather updates and emergency alerts. Prepare emergency kits with essential supplies, including food, water and medication. And charge devices and power banks in case of power outages,” he added.

Potential impacts are flooding of roads, settlements and low-lying areas; falling trees blocking major roads; major traffic disruption, including road closures and flights cancellations; displacement of affected communities, with potential shortages of food and water. Stay safe and stay informed.
