People living in the north-eastern parts of KwaZulu-Natal should brace themselves for severe thunderstorms today (Wednesday).

Heavy downpours, hail, excessive lightning and strong, damaging winds are expected to accompany the thunder.

Possible impacts may include:
• Flooding of roads and settlements in low-lying areas, resulting in the closure of some bridges and roads
• Falling trees blocking major roads
• Danger to life due to fast-flowing streams
• Danger to humans and livestock owing to excessive lightning

Motorists are urged to take extreme caution and, where possible, are advised to avoid bridges in low-lying areas.

Place all outdoor activities on hold, as the potential excessive lightning, hail and flooding could result in injury or even death.

SAWS urges residents to stay indoors and provide shelter for their pets and livestock in the event of flying debris.
