The Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) has cautioned that the inclement weather will likely affect driving conditions.
“The South African Weather Service has issued alerts for severe thunderstorms and disruptive rainfall that are likely to affect visibility and travelling between 6pm and 1am on Wednesday,” RTMC stated, citing that some major routes, including the N3, will be affected by fog, causing poor visibility.
Meanwhile, the SAWS has also warned that some low-water bridges could overflow, with powerful currents that could sweep away vehicles and lead to loss of lives and property.
“It is strongly advised that motorists do not enter flooded low-water bridges or roads.
“The use of vehicle headlights, while driving at a reasonably low speed, will be useful during the showery conditions.
“Motorists should ensure clear windscreens, as traffic and road markings could be difficult to see during the occurrence of heavy rain, even for vehicles with properly working wipers, in some instances,” SAWS states.
RTMC shared the following important safety tips:
1. Reduce speed: Wet roads can be slippery. Drive at a reduced speed to maintain control of your vehicle
2. Maintain safe distance: Increase the distance between your vehicle and the one in front to allow for longer stopping distances
3. Use headlights: Keep your headlights on to improve visibility and ensure you are visible to other drivers
4. Avoid sudden manoeuvres: Sudden braking or sharp turns can lead to loss of control on slippery surfaces
5. Be mindful of pedestrians and cyclists: They may also be struggling with reduced visibility and challenging conditions
6. Stay informed: Keep updated with the latest weather forecasts and traffic reports
