Jozini Municipality resolved to support all local high schools with groceries during matric boot camps, ensuring pupils were fully focused on studying.
“We did that with an understanding that some parents are struggling to support their children, especially when they have to attend after-school classes or boot camps.
“We know it is incredibly difficult for learners to focus on their schoolwork when they are hungry,” said Mathe.
He also encouraged those who did not do well to not give up.
“Education is the only tool that could open doors for a brighter future. Those who did not do well, I beg them to go back to school and try again. This is not the end of the road.”
Mathe’s passion for education is deeply rooted in his vision of maintaining uMkhanyakude District’s stellar performance.
In 2023, the district achieved top spot in KZN with an impressive 90% pass rate, securing a top 5 ranking nationally.
In addition to this initiative, the municipality supports deserving students through the Tertiary Registration Assistance Programme which helps qualifying students from Jozini register at tertiary institutions.
Furthermore, Mathe’s annual Mayoral Matric Excellence Awards reward outstanding teachers, principals and pupils for their exceptional results.
