IFP National Deputy Chairperson, Thembeni kaMadlopha-Mthethwa welcomed the lengthy sentence imposed by the Pongola Regional Court, which heard how Nxumalo had assaulted women, from minors to 38 years of age.

Spree of GBV offences
In one instance, he acted with an accomplice, but he was always armed with a sharp object when committing the offences.

On 13 September 2019, Nxumalo kidnapped two children and took them to Jozini Dam area where he held them captive. One of the victims was robbed and raped during the encounter.

The following day, he accosted a woman in her home where she was with her boyfriend and granny. He raped her and robbed her before fleeing the scene.

He raped and robbed another woman in her home on 16 September, before going on the run and being arrested in Durban.

His victims were taken to the Othobothini Thuthuzela Care Centre for support. During an identity parade, all the complainants were able to identify Nxumalo.

One Victim Impact Statement outlined how she had to relocate following the rape; another said she had to leave work from trauma; while another suffered from health issues.

Praise for sentencing
Nxumalo was sentenced to 30 years for four counts of rape, 30 years for the robberies with aggravating circumstances, three years for theft, and 25 years for kidnapping.

The court ordered that the sentences run consecutively, resulting in the 88-year sentence.

KaMadlopha-Mthethwa said, “We commend the police and justice system for their role in bringing Nxumalo to justice. This case highlights the ongoing vulnerability of young women in our communities.

“Nxumalo’s actions demonstrate a blatant disregard for women, and his lengthy sentence serves as a warning to would-be perpetrators of gender-based violence.

“As the IFP, we call on the government, particularly the Department of Social Development, to provide ongoing psychosocial support to the victims and survivors of these incidents.”
