Social development MEC devastated by ongoing GBV killings
Community outrage over the brutal killing of a young woman, call for urgent action to address GBV-F in KZN

Heartbroken Social Development MEC Mbali Shinga has expressed her devastation around ongoing gender-based violence and femicide (GBV-F) incidents in KZN.
Shinga was among the residents picketing outside uMzumbe Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday, chanting for justice and expressing outrage over the brutal killing of a young woman.
The main aim of the picket was to convey a strong message demanding accountability and urgent action to address GBV-F.
Shinga attended the court proceedings as part of her commitment to support victims and their families, and to emphasise the department’s stance against GBV-F.
“The killing of [the woman] by the father of her child is devastating. The suspect appeared in court and was remanded in police custody to allow him to obtain a legal representative.
“We thanked the community members and organisations that came out in large numbers to persuade the court not to grant him bail. He is expected to appear on Wednesday next week for a formal bail application.
“Both the deceased and suspect are still young, and their child is now left without any parents,” said Shinga.
