Heavy blow for KZN health department following the loss of four medical professionals including, Ngwelezana Hospital's Dr Siyabonga Zulu

The KZN Department of Health has suffered a big blow after losing four medical staff members in one week.

The sad news was revealed on Wednesday by Health MEC Nomagugu Simelane.

“We are shocked and deeply saddened by the untimely deaths of four medical professionals in separate incidents at four different facilities.

“The department is struggling to come to terms with the extraordinary loss of these staff members, whose dedication and service left an indelible mark on their colleagues and communities,” she said.

Simelane explained that on Sunday morning, her department lost Dr Siyabonga Zulu, a doctor at Ngwelezana Hospital’s anaesthesia department.

“On Monday, we lost another valued team member, Dr Alulutho Mazwi, who was based at Prince Mshiyeni Memorial Hospital in Durban.

“The heartbreak continued on Tuesday with the passing, at work, of Mvelo Cele, a radiographer at Port Shepstone Hospital.

“The fourth case is that of Dr Tumelo Kgaladi, who worked at Addington Hospital’s obstetrics and gynaecology unit, who died at his home in Clare Estate,” said Simelane.

The MEC said these consecutive losses have left a huge void, especially at a time when their skills, experience and passion were greatly needed in the healthcare system.

“Each of them represented a future filled with promise, professional excellence, and the ability to inspire and uplift those around them.

“It has been truly devastating to learn of the deaths of these young, talented professionals at four of our healthcare facilities.

“They were individuals who not only contributed immensely to our healthcare system, but also embodied the spirit of service, compassion and leadership.

“Their potential to shape and mentor future generations has been cut short, and we are heartbroken by this loss,” she said.
