Resumption of mid-year exams in KZN schools welcomed

KZN Premier commended for intervention to resolve impasse during teachers' work to rule strike

The IFP in KZN has welcomed the resumption of mid-year examinations across the province, and applauded the intervention of Premier Thami Ntuli.

The party’s deputy chair, iNkosi Ntandoyenkosi Shabalala, commended Ntuli for his decisive leadership in resolving the impasse that disrupted teaching and examination processes owing to work to rule protest action by teachers.

“This intervention has ensured that learners can return to a stable academic environment and continue their assessments without further delay,” said Shabalala.

“The situation reached a critical point after the commencement of protest action on 2 June, which saw educators strictly adhering to their core duties as per their contracts, without providing additional academic support.

“This led to the cancellation of extra classes and the postponement of June examinations, and many schools were unable to administer assessments due to insufficient resources.”

Shabalala said the action was spearheaded by the SADTU and NATU unions, which raised long-standing concerns with the Department of Education (DoE).

“These included the non-payment of acting allowances for office-based educators, and the failure to appoint substitute teachers, among others,” he said.

“Ntuli led a provincial delegation in direct engagement with SADTU and NATU leadership. During these discussions, Ntuli announced that R900-million would be reprioritised to support the education sector.

“He further committed that all outstanding school payments for 2024 and May 2025 would be finalised within two weeks, and that processes to fill critical vacancies in the department were already under way,” he said.
