Massive data breach exposes 16 billion login credentials

Uncovered caches of logins stolen by datastealer malware described as 'weaponisable intelligence at scale'

In what has been touted as one of the largest data breaches in the history of the internet, 16 billion login credentials are at risk.

According to Cybernews, who broke the story on Friday, said the data likely originates from various infostealers and ‘opens access to Facebook, Google, Apple, and any other service imaginable’.

The online tech publication said none, bar one, of the exposed datasets were previously reported.

Wired magazine reported in late May that a security researcher discovered a ‘mysterious database’ with 184 million records.

Cybernews warns: ‘unnecessarily compiling sensitive information can be as damaging as actively trying to steal it’.

The publication said researchers claim new massive datasets emerge every few weeks, showing how prevalent infostealer malware is.

“This is not just a leak – it’s a blueprint for mass exploitation. With over 16 billion login records exposed, cybercriminals now have unprecedented access to personal credentials that can be used for account takeover, identity theft, and highly targeted phishing. What’s especially concerning is the structure and recency of these datasets – these aren’t just old breaches being recycled.

“This is fresh, weaponizable intelligence at scale,” researchers said, as published by Cybernews.

The datasets were reportedly exposed only briefly; long enough for researchers to uncover them but not long enough to discover who was controlling vast amounts of data.
