Richards Bay agrihub focuses on youth empowerment, employment

Richards Bay Fresh Produce Agrihub expected to create numerous opportunities for youth to explore

Construction of the Richards Bay Fresh Produce Agrihub is set to create thousands of job opportunities for the youth.

This was announced by Agriculture and Rural Development MEC Thembeni kaMadlopha-Mthethwa at Youth Day commemorations at the University of Zululand last Monday.

KaMadlopha-Mthethwa said the agricultural sector has numerous opportunities for youth to explore, including establishing agricultural enterprises which the department would facilitate.

She also shared plans for the Richards Bay Fresh Produce Agrihub, saying young people can capitalise on this opportunity by producing crops and vegetables for the hub to export from the Industrial Development Zone in the City of uMhlathuze.

“This initiative will create more than 2 600 job opportunities during and post-construction, with young people being the majority. The KZN Youth Empowerment Fund that was launched by the premier last year has awarded R1.7-million to Siyaceba Farming, a Camperdown-based agricultural farming enterprise,” she said.
