Military Ombud: SANDF outlines proper process for complaints via roadshows

Outreach programme to hit military bases, taxi ranks and other public spaces

The Office of the South African Military Ombud is taking its outreach programme around KZN, educating both serving and former members of the SANDF and the public as to its mandate.

The Military Ombud, Lieutenant General Vusumuzi Masondo, said they will visit military bases, taxi ranks and other public spaces.

He explained the office is “mandated by law to investigate complaints lodged in writing by members of the SANDF regarding their conditions of service, like unfair dismissal, promotions, tools of trade, and others.

“Part of their mandate is also to investigate complaints brought by members of the public against SANDF members on official duty, like the use of excessive force.”

Members and former members of the SANDF have 180 days to complain after an occurrence, while the public has 90 days.

After this timeframe, members would have to apply for condonation of late submission.

“We need to strengthen our relationship with all the role players and disseminate all the information about the office,” said Masondo.
