City of uMhlathuze condemns alleged attack on employee in Richards Bay

A City of uMhlathuze employee has reportedly been hospitalised after she was allegedly attacked by striking workers in Richards Bay on Tuesday evening.

According to the municipality, the employee was among other municipal workers collecting waste in Richards Bay when they were ‘violently attacked by individuals allegedly part of the striking group’.

“One employee was struck with a sharp object, sustaining injuries. She was immediately taken to hospital, where she is reported to be in a stable condition. Once discharged, she is expected to lay criminal charges with the police,” said the city in a statement.

The municipality said this follows an attempt to petrol bomb a municipal substation in Meerensee.

“Fortunately, their attempt was unsuccessful, and no damage was reported.

“The city has since escalated its security response by deploying additional personnel to safeguard municipal workers and property.

“The police have also been alerted and remain on high alert to ensure stability and protection for all employees continuing their duties.

“Furthermore, the city has approached the Labour Court to obtain an urgent interdict against this unlawful strike.

“A ruling on the matter is currently pending,” said uMhlathuze.
