Double life sentence for rape and murder convict

Four years after the brutal rape and murder of a 44-year-old woman, her assailant has been sentenced.

Mtubatuba Regional Court last week handed down two life sentences to Velaphi Ngwenya (35) after he pleaded guilty to the July 2021 crimes.

The court heard how the community discovered the woman’s body abandoned in the bushes with bruising around the neck.

Police learnt she had been seen in the company of Ngwenya the night before, with DNA evidence positively linking him to the crime.

Ngwenya was sentenced to life behind bars on each count of rape and murder.
