Thunderstorms predicted for KZN

Severe thunderstorms forecast for most parts of KZN, warmer and cloudy conditions expected in various parts of SA on Election Day on Wednesday

Heavy downpours are expected in some parts of KZN this (Monday) afternoon until tomorrow (Tuesday) evening.

These areas will be affected in the Zululand region: Big Five Hlabisa, Hluhluwe, Jozini, Mthonjaneni, Mtubatuba and Nkandla.

“A surface trough over the central parts of the country and a ridging surface high in the east will result in widespread showers and thundershowers over KZN today [Monday] and scattered showers and thundershowers over KZN tomorrow [Tuesday],” the SA Weather Service (SAWS) warns.

“Severe thunderstorms accompanied by heavy downpours, hail and severe lightning resulting in flooding and damage to infrastructure and settlements are expected over most parts of KZN except between Port Edward and Mtubatuba today [Monday] and expected over the northern parts of KZN tomorrow [Tuesday].”

On Election Day, Wednesday, 4 November, SAWS predicts fine and warm to very hot conditions over the central and western parts of the country.

In contrast, partly cloudy and cool conditions are expected in places over the eastern parts with morning drizzle possible along the Eastern Drakensberg.

Isolated afternoon showers and thundershowers are also expected over the eastern parts of the country.

SAWS encourages voters, election officials and the public to:

* Stay hydrated and take precautions against heat exposure, particularly in areas expecting very hot conditions
* Carry umbrellas or raincoats where showers and thundershowers are expected
* Allow sufficient time for travel and exercise caution on wet roads especially during periods of reduced visibility
