KZN courts curb the scourge of gender-based violence
A 43-YEAR-OLD man has been sentenced by the Ulundi Regional Court to life imprisonment for the rape of a 20-year-old woman.
The victim was travelling to her child’s paternal homestead in December 2022 in the Ezimfabeni area. After disembarking from a taxi, the accused, who lived nearby, stalked and accosted her.

He took her to a nearby homestead where he undressed her and raped her several times. He then asked her to get dressed and took her to her destination. There, she reported the rape.
The accused’s parents and elders from the community were called. However, the accused fled the area but was arrested five months later.
Prosecutor Xolani Bhekisisa Ndlela presented a victim impact statement facilitated by Court Preparation Officer Amanda Pretty Nxumalo.
In her statement, the victim said the incident had left an indelible mark on her. She still experienced flashbacks and is afraid to go anywhere alone. The event had also been detrimental to her relationship with her child’s father.
The accused was sentenced accordingly.
“Curbing the scourge of gender-based violence remains one of the organisation’s top priorities,” said KZN National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) regional spokesperson, Natasha Ramkisson-Kara.
