Richards Bay bar brawl sentencing postponed

Sentencing in the ‘bar room brawl’ has been postponed to October

The Richards Bay Regional Court on Monday postponed sentencing in the ‘bar room brawl’ case until 10 October.

Benjamin ‘Bennie’ du Preez was in August found guilty of murdering Cornelius Johannes ‘Neels’ du Plessis during a fight at The Ranch nightclub in Arboretum.

Co-accused Petrus Ernestus ‘Boela’ Olivier was acquitted of the same charge.

According to the charge sheet, Du Preez could face a minimum of 15 years’ imprisonment ‘unless the accused can show the existence of substantial and compelling circumstances which warrant a lesser sentence’.
