Big boost for businesses

Mtubatuba, Jozini, uMhlabuyalingana and Big 5 Hlabisa municipalities

A NEW programme has been launched to support rural economies through donations and job creation.

The Local Economic Development (LED) programme in uMkhanyakude District saw 20 cooperatives receiving grass-cutters and sewing machines to boost operations.

“The vision we have for this project is to bring about real, tangible change in the lives of our people,” said Cogta MEC Thulasizwe Buthelezi, who noted the cooperatives come from all 77 wards across the

Mtubatuba, Jozini, uMhlabuyalingana and Big 5 Hlabisa municipalities.

Buthelezi also revealed that 50 Jozini residents will be employed through the Expanded Public Works Programme, boosting job creation.

He added that, as part of his department’s commitment to community safety, 50 lightning conductors will be installed in high-risk rural areas across the district.
Further to this, Buthelezi engaged ward committee members, urging them to work closely with councillors to ensure effective service delivery.

“Ward committees are the backbone of community development. Their active participation is crucial in ensuring this programme reaches those who need it most,” he added.

Jozini Mayor Nkosinathi Myeni described the LED programme as a lifeline for cooperatives and small businesses, while Mtubatuba Mayor Mxolisi Mthethwa praised it as a practical solution to the socio-economic challenges facing rural communities.
