Rural Amatikulu pupils supported with new school uniforms
Sugar industry shares sweetness with Back-to-School campaign
MORE than 5 000 pupils benefitted from the Back-to-School campaign organised by role players in the sugar industry.
A joint sponsorship between agri-processing business Tongaat Hulett, small-scale growers, traditional tribal councils and local sugar mills saw 150 pupils from five Amatikulu schools receive new uniforms.

These included Phambili High, Wetane Primary, Skhonyana Primary, Lokothwayo Primary and Mkhukhuze Primary schools. Through its Social Economic Development (SED) unit, Tongaat Hulett has committed to supporting 350 further beneficiaries annually with full school uniforms.
Another 100 pupils from schools near Maidstone Mill – Waterfall Primary, Kruisfotein Primary, Simpiwe Secondary and Mshwathi Primary – also received new uniforms and shoes.
The donation is a result of a motivation by the Makhosikhosi Trust which, through its partnership with Tongaat Hulett dating back to 2013, allows for the leasing of land for sugar cane farming while providing social upliftment, economic opportunities, and rural development for the local community.
Tongaat Hulett manages the farms, creates jobs, supports education, and addresses historical land claims, demonstrating a model for land reform in South Africa.
Traditional leader iNkosi Bonokwakhe Prince Gumede praised Tongaat Hulett for investing in the future of local youth, and helping restore pride and attendance in schools. Snethemba Kunene, SED manager at Tongaat Hulett, said the company valued the future of its rural grower communities.
“Uniforms level the playing field, reducing visible economic differences among pupils. Uniforms also contribute to an improved culture of learning in schools as they build a sense of pride and increase learner attendance,” said Kunene.
“For families struggling financially, removing the burden of buying uniforms can make school more accessible. Through the Back-to-School campaign, we aim to reach children from low-income households located within our cane growing areas.”
