Bail for drunk drivers arrested in weekend blitz

Twelve drunk drivers arrested in Richards Bay operation were released on bail at the Richards Bay Magistrate's Court

Drunk drivers charged over the weekend during a multidisciplinary operation appeared in the Richards Bay Magistrate’s Court on Monday.

This follows their arrest on Saturday night in an operation conducted by the Road Traffic Inspectorate in Richards Bay, working with SAPS and uMhlathuze traffic officers.

The 12 accused facing charges of drinking and driving under the influence were released on bail on Sunday and came before court on Monday. The cases were postponed for various dates in November for blood results to be obtained by the state and for further investigation.

According to a statement issued by the transport department, the highest alcohol content reading was 1.46 mg/l, with the drivers arrested between the ages of 24 years and 48 years old.

KZN Transport and Human Settlements MEC Siboniso Duma, who visited the team in action on Saturday night, saluted them for their committment to remove intoxicated, reckless and irresponsible drivers from the roads.

He said they’ve arrested more than 411 drunk motorists since 15 August, and vowed to intensify these operations even over the festive season.

RTI arrested 7 drivers of light motor vehicles, 3 drivers of light delivery motor vehicles, and 2 drivers of minibus taxis. Drunk drivers nabbed:

  • 45 years (0.57 mg/l)
  • 47 years (0.70 mg/l)
  • 48 years (0.69 mg/l)

Three youngest drivers

  • 24 years (0.41 mg/l)
  • 30 years (0.41 mg/l)
  • 31 years (0.41 mg/l)
