Political parties gear up for uMfolozi by-election

IEC announces date for uMfolozi Ward 17 by-election after death of councillor

The Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) has confirmed that a by-election will be held in Ward 17 under uMfolozi Municipality following the death of long-serving councillor Sibusiso Sibiya.

The by-election is scheduled for 17 December.

The ward became vacant after Council declared the position open during a special sitting two weeks ago.

Sibiya, who represented the ward since the 2021 local government elections, passed away recently after a period of illness.

With the announcement, political parties have begun preparations to contest the seat.

ANC Chief Whip in uMfolozi, Simangele Thabethe, said the party was determined to reclaim the ward, which it lost to the IFP during the last elections.

“We want to win. Tomorrow we are going to the ward to campaign and identify a potential candidate,” said Thabethe.

Meanwhile, IFP constituency chairperson Nkanyiso Zulu expressed sadness over Sibiya’s passing, describing him as a dedicated community servant.

“We are deeply saddened by the loss of our councillor. However, we are ready for the by-election and will continue delivering on our promises to the community,” said Zulu.

Zulu added that the party’s local structures would soon elect a new candidate to stand in the poll.

Ward 17, one of the areas hardest hit by water shortages and poor road conditions, is expected to be closely contested.
