Wet weekend keeps paramedics busy

Paramedics respond to serious road crashes across KwaZulu-Natal as heavy rains wreak havoc

Emergency services had their work cut out for them as the weekend’s wet weather brought with it several road accidents.

In the Zululand region, KwaZulu Private Ambulance responded to a three-vehicle crash on the P535 Maholoholo near Empangeni at around 5.30pm on Friday.

The accident involving a bakkie, car and light delivery vehicle resulted in injuries to four occupants.

Two sustained minor injuries, which required transportation to hospital.

Traffic flow was affected, with one lane closed.

Earlier in the day in Vryheid, KwaZulu Private Ambulance responded to a crash at the R69/R618 intersection.

A severe accident involved a truck and light passenger vehicle saw both vehicles leaving the roadway.

“Three occupants were treated, with one minor injury and two serious injuries. SAPS were on scene,” said KwaZulu Private Ambulance spokesperson Craig Botha.

“The weekend saw numerous other trauma responses, including a Saturday collision on the corner of Smith and Biyela streets in Empangeni involving a bakkie and a car, which resulted in one minor and one serious injury.”
