Don’t fall for latest scam, urges City of uMhlathuze
uMhlathuze Deputy Mayor Christo Botha warns of latest scam, urges residents not to fall for fake 'electricity disconnection' message
UMHLATHUZE Deputy Mayor Christo Botha has warned city residents of the latest scam doing the rounds, and urges vigilance.
Targeted community members receive an SMS informing them of a scheduled electricity disconnection owing to a municipal account in arrears.

In an attempt to appear legitimate, the message states the sender’s name and that he is from the City of uMhlathuze.
It also states the residential address in question and that the sender attempted to contact the homeowner but could not get hold of them.
The message goes on to say the property’s electricity will be disconnected within a two-hour period.
A Meerensee resident received such a message earlier today (Thursday), and alerted Botha to the situation.
Speaking to the Zululand Observer, Botha said the municipality would never send disconnection warnings via SMS, and urged residents not to fall for the scam.
