Empangeni SPCA thanks community for support, urges pet owners to protect animals during New Year’s fireworks

Residents urged to keep Empangeni, Richards Bay SPCA emergency numbers to hand in case of emergencies

AS 2025 draws to a close, Empangeni SPCA extends its sincere gratitude to every individual, business, volunteer and donor who supported their work throughout the year.

“Your generosity, compassion and commitment have enabled us to continue protecting, treating and rehoming vulnerable animals in our care,” said SPCA chairperson Marina Visser.

“Thanks to the support of our community, we were able to respond to emergencies, provide medical treatment, educate the public, and advocate for the welfare of animals who cannot speak for themselves. We truly could not do this vital work without you.

“As we approach New Year celebrations, Empangeni SPCA also appeals to all pet owners to take extra precautions to keep their animals safe during fireworks.

“Fireworks can cause severe fear, anxiety and distress in pets, often leading to injuries, runaways or even fatalities,” said Visser.

The SPCA urges pet owners to:
• Keep pets safely indoors during fireworks
• Ensure gates, doors and fences are secured adequately
• Provide a safe space where pets can feel protected
• Avoid leaving pets unattended outdoors
• Consult a veterinarian if your pet requires calming assistance

“By taking these simple but important steps, we can reduce unnecessary suffering and start 2026 with compassion and responsibility.
“Our staff will be driving around on New Year’s Eve to pick up stay animals. Please keep Empangeni SPCA’s emergency number to hand: 083 4823866, as well as Richards Bay SPCA’s emergency number: 063 8790287.
“Once again, thank you to our community for standing with the SPCA throughout 2025. We wish everyone a safe, peaceful and caring New Year for both people and animals.”
