Whatever the temperatures, the maximum UV index across the Zululand region will be at an unhealthy 12.0 on Tuesday, and residents are urged to take the necessary precautions.

These include:

• Avoiding the sun during peak hours (10am to 4pm)

• Wearing protective clothing. Cover exposed skin with long sleeves and pants

• Wearing a wide-brimmed hat to protect face and neck

• Liberally applying SPF 50+ sunscreen if going outside. Reapply every two hours or immediately after swimming or sweating

• Wear UV-blocking sunglasses

• Be aware of reflections. Take extra caution near bright surfaces like sand or water, as they can reflect UV radiation and increase your exposure

• Stay hydrated. Drink plenty of water throughout the day
