Search ongoing for missing bather off St Lucia

NSRI issues safety appeal amid ongoing searches for missing bathers along KZN coastline

All relevant authorities, including the SAPS and National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) remain engaged in search efforts at various points along the KZN coastline.

This after several bathers, in separate incidents over the last few days, have gone missing while swimming in the sea.

This includes the teenage boy (14) who disappeared while swimming with his friends at Jabula Beach in St Lucia on New Year’s Day.

According to the iSimangaliso Wetland Park authority, three 14-year-old boys from Hluhluwe were swimming at Jabula Beach when they got into difficulty.

The NSRI St Lucia duty crew were dispatched, and two of the boys were rescued and received medical treatment. A search was launched for the third.

Other bathers have gone missing off the KZN coast at Pennington, Hibberdene, uMkomaas, Durban and Ballito.

“Where missing persons are located and recovered, police will coordinate with families for formal identification,” said NSRI spokesperson Craig Lambinon.

Safety appeal

“NSRI, police, emergency services and lifeguards are appealing to the public to be cautious during this full moon spring tide phase, where rip currents and sea currents can be stronger than normal,” urged Lambinon.

“Only swim at beaches protected by lifeguards.

“Be cautious and exercise safety on inland waters.

“Do not drink alcohol and swim.

“Parents, please ensure your children have responsible adult supervision in and around water.

“Anyone launching any kind of craft onto water – wear your life-jacket, and download and use the NSRI SafeTRX smart phone app.”
