Zululand marathon makes a comeback

Zululand Ultra Marathon set to take place in Zululand District in April

Making a triumphant return after several years on ice, the prestigious Zululand Ultra Marathon was launched last week.

Set to take place on Sunday, 19 April, the return of this Comrades qualifier was announced by Zululand District Mayor Michael Khumalo at a launch event in Ulundi, attended by KZN’s sporting leadership and dignitaries.

The race offers 56km, 10km, and 5km walk and fun run.

Khumalo explained that the marathon will start in Ulundi and cross the finish line in Nongoma.

“This marathon is one of the most important races in the province, serving as a qualifier for the world-renowned Comrades Marathon. “We decided to revive it to show our commitment to supporting athletes and promoting Zululand as a hub for endurance sport,” he said.

The mayor further explained that this marathon will bring together participants from all walks of life to celebrate well-being, energy and endurance.

“The marathon was first held years ago, driven by the commitment to promoting a healthy lifestyle and fostering community engagement.

“The Zululand Ultra Marathon is more than just a race; it is a celebration of resilience, culture and community. “Set against the scenic backdrop of Zululand, the marathon offers athletes and visitors an opportunity to experience the region’s rich heritage while testing their physical limits.

“The return of the marathon is expected to boost local tourism and stimulate economic activity in the district. The marathon promises a professionally organised event, with safety measures and support stations along the route to ensure a world-class experience for all participants.

“In partnership with athletics bodies and sponsors, we are committed to making this year’s marathon a resounding success. The reinstatement of the race signals a new chapter for sport in Zululand, one that blends tradition, endurance and opportunity,” said Khumalo.

Details on entering the event will be made public during the course of this week.
