Licence suspension and R30k fine for reckless KZN motorist

Hefty fine for man who clocked 172km/h in a 120km/h zone on the N2

A KZN motorist who was arrested in December for clocking 172km/h in a 120km/h zone has been handed a stiff fine.

Musa Mnguni was arrested on 10 December on the N2 in Park Rynie during the Department of Transport’s (DoT) ‘No Nonsense’ festive season roadblocks.

Mnguni this week appeared in the Scottburgh Magistrate’s Court, where he received a R30 000 fine or eight months in prison, as well as the suspension of his driver’s licence.

This is according to the DoT, which issued a statement this morning (Tuesday).

“Through the suspension of the driver’s licence, we are communicating a clear message that a driver’s licence is a legally granted privilege, not a constitutional right,” said DoT spokesperson Ndabezinhle Sibiya.

He said the traffic police are using ‘cutting edge technology’ to ensure safety on the roads by holding to account those who break the law.
