Teen caught with illegal firearm

Teenager charged with possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition in Ndwedwe

An 18 year old was arrested in Ndwedwe on Sunday, and charged with possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition.

SAPS communications officer Priya Nunkumar said police were in the process of charging the owner of a shebeen for illegal dealing in liquor, when the suspect was searched and the firearm discovered.

“When police enquired about the firearm, the suspect reportedly said the gun belonged to his father, and he did not have a licence for the firearm. A 9mm pistol with an unclear serial number, as well as two live rounds of ammunition were seized,” she said.

Nunkumar said the firearm will be sent for ballistics testing to determine if it has been used in any criminal activities. The suspect is expected to appear before the Ndwedwe Magistrate’s Court soon.
