Ongoye pupils get to know their rights
King Cetshwayo District learners empowered with knowledge to help them make informed decisions about their future
Learners at Ongoye Secondary School were given a valuable opportunity to learn about their rights and gain information about services offered by various government departments and organisations recently.
The awareness programme, organised by the Government Communication and Information System (GCIS) under the theme Know Your Rights, Raise Your Voice, aimed to empower learners with knowledge that can help them make informed decisions about their future.

King Cetshwayo District Municipality (KCDM) Speaker Siphesihle Mkhwanazi, who attended the event, encouraged the pupils to remain focused on their studies and work hard to build a better future for themselves.
School principal Sibusiso Ngema welcomed the initiative, saying it played a significant role in equipping learners with vital information that could positively influence their lives.
He said the pupils also benefitted from learning about the dangers and consequences of drug and substance abuse from Sanca, while SAPS warned them about the risks of getting involved in criminal activities.
“We had various government departments sharing important information with our learners, and this initiative will have a meaningful impact on their lives,” said Ngema.

A number of stakeholders participated in the programme, providing learners with important information and guidance.
These included the Department of Home Affairs; the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC); LifeLine Zululand; Department of Economic Development, Tourism and Environmental Affairs (EDTEA); the KZN Economic Regulator Authority (KZNERA); Sanca Zululand; the University of Zululand; Zenzele Kanye Nathi Group; the South African Social Security Agency (Sassa); the SAPS; Department of Health, and the Department of Labour.
