WATCH: Suspected human remains discovered in dunes north of Alkantstrand

Bones discovered at Palm Beach north of Alkantstrand in Richards Bay on Wednesday

A number of police units descended on Palm Beach north of Alkantstrand this (Wednesday) afternoon after bones were discovered, buried in clay on the dune front.

Community activist Melinda Ashington grew curious when she saw a piece of clothing sticking out of the sand, and as she dug deeper, she uncovered a number of what appear to be human bones.

The bones, which were buried in clay, appear to be fairly old

She alerted the police, and as word spread, more people began arriving.

“I made the discovery just after noon, at the high water mark. The bones appear to be quite old,” said Melinda.

Erosion of the dune barrier has accelerated over the past few years, exposing many items of interest, including what some believe to be dinosaur footprints.

Pathologists will examine the bones to determine their age, while a possible ‘missing person’ investigation will follow.
