FMD vaccinations begin in Hlabisa and Mtubatuba

Mtubatuba, Hlabisa livestock to be vaccinated against foot and mouth disease as uMkhanyakude District already sees 130k doses administered.

THE foot and mouth disease (FMD) vaccination programme has officially begun in Hlabisa and Mtubatuba.

The KZN Department of Agriculture and Rural Development said teams are in these areas from today (Friday) until Thursday, 16 April.

“According to the schedule, team one (1 to 10) will be stationed at Inkosi Mtubatuba, overseeing vaccinations at dip tanks, with team two (11 to 20) to be based in Big 5 Hlabisa,” the department stated.

“All livestock farmers and cattle owners are advised to present their cattle at the dip tanks by 6am.”

As part of the vaccination programme, 130 807 doses have already been administered across 123 dip tanks in uMhlabuyalingana and Jozini.

“Each area under the remaining local municipalities from uMkhanyakude District – Big 5 Hlabisa and Inkosi Mtubatuba – is expected to receive 10 vaccination teams, which will administer about 55 000 vaccines.

“These areas are home to 24 private farms with beef meat production, which will also have their farms vaccinated,” said the department.
