Friday thunderstorms forecast for inland KZN

South African Weather Service (SAWS) issues a level 1 warning for severe thunderstorms in KZN

Zululand residents in the inland portion of the region are in for potential severe thunderstorms this (Friday) afternoon, extending into the night.

This after the South African Weather Service (SAWS) issued a level 1 warning for severe thunderstorms from midday to midnight today.

Affected areas are Abaqulusi, Nkandla, uMgeni and uMvoti, as well as much of the Drakensberg region.

“Severe thunderstorms accompanied by heavy downpours, damaging winds, excessive lightning and hail, resulting in localised flooding and damage to infrastructure and settlements are expected over the western parts of KZN today,” said the SAWS.

Potential impacts

• Localised damage to infrastructure and settlements
• Localised flooding of susceptible roads and bridges
• Slippery roads and poor visibility
• Difficult driving conditions on dirt roads
• Hail

Residents in affected areas are advised to avoid travelling on bridges and roads in low-lying areas; avoid outdoor activities as lightning, hail and flooding may result in injury; stay indoors well clear of windows; shelter pets and cover vehicles; move livestock and cars to safe, sheltered areas.
