Mkhwanazi leads national crime fighting project
KZN Police Commissioner to lead operation that will focus on dismantling organised crime networks in South Africa
KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi has been appointed to lead a major national crime-fighting initiative targeting organised crime across the country.
The Witness has learnt that the project, which is already underway, brings together multiple law enforcement disciplines under a single command structure.

Speaking in an interview with a national broadcaster on Friday, Mkhwanazi confirmed that the initiative will work closely with the National Prosecuting Authority.
The operation will focus on dismantling organised crime networks, including drug syndicates, and investigating government officials suspected of living beyond their lawful means.
Mkhwanazi said authorities are also concerned about the growing influence of criminal networks within state institutions.

He described the initiative as a co-ordinated national effort to disrupt criminal operations and prevent syndicates from exerting undue influence over government structures.
“We have identified priority targets and will focus on neutralising them,” said Mkhwanazi.
As for the cost of the project, Mkhwanazi said they were looking at the proceeds of crime, which are held in a special fund that in turn finances police operations.
He added that a key concern is the alleged involvement of some law enforcement officials in criminal activities, warning that authorities must address both external and internal threats.
“We would be naïve to think the threat is only external and not examine what is happening within our own ranks,” he said.
Mkhwanazi said a team has already been assembled, with members drawn from various law enforcement agencies, and that priority cases will be identified for immediate attention.
Despite his new national role, Mkhwanazi assured residents that he will remain in his position as KwaZulu-Natal police commissioner and that policing in the province will not be compromised.
“I am confident that those selected for this project will deliver the expected outcomes, while KwaZulu-Natal remains in safe hands,” he said.
