The move is set to see an end in the province’s reliance on Gauteng and Western Cape for DNA processing

The move is set to see an end in the province’s reliance on Gauteng and Western Cape for DNA processing.

KZN Premier Thami Ntuli emphasised that the establishment of the laboratory signals a strategic shift in the province’s approach to policing – one that integrates science, technology and evidence-based investigation.

“This facility represents our commitment to building a safer KwaZulu-Natal, where policing is guided not only by bravery, but also by precision, truth and scientific rigour,” said Ntuli.

He further highlighted that the laboratory will play a pivotal role in addressing complex crimes, including gender-based violence and femicide (GBV-F), by improving the quality and turnaround time of forensic evidence.

He underscored that forensic science enables the justice system to move from suspicion to certainty, ensuring evidence speaks clearly and decisively in the pursuit of accountability.

Ntuli also commended SAPS and law enforcement agencies for their continued efforts in reducing crime across KZN.

“The introduction of this forensic science laboratory serves as a force multiplier in the fight against crime. It enhances investigative capacity, strengthens prosecution and ensures the collective efforts of police and communities translate into successful convictions,” he added.
