Anglers rescued after boat capsizes in Richards Bay

NSRI rescues two fishermen after boat capsizes in Richards Bay

Two men were lucky to escape injury after their boat capsized near the Port of Richards Bay last week.

The National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) sprang into action after multiple red distress flares were spotted in the vicinity of Pelican Island.

The NSRI launched the rescue craft Spirit of Round Table II. Upon arrival, a small open 14ft boat was located with one man inside and another in the water.

Both local men had been out fishing when the incident occurred.

“They reported that their boat was capsized by a wave coming over the submerged sand bank. They had both been in the water but had managed to right their capsized boat as NSRI were arriving on the scene,” said NSRI Richards Bay station commander Norman Rautenbach.

“The man in the water was assisted into their boat while an NSRI rescue swimmer was deployed into the water and established a towline to their boat,” said Rautenbach.

The boat was towed to the Zululand Yacht Club.
