688 road traffic officers deployed for Election Day

KZN Transport MEC deploys RTI, Operation Shanela officers to guard several roads, ensure traffic flow on Election Day

Hundreds of Road Traffic Inspectorate (RTI) and Operation Shanela officers will be deployed to monitor several routes across KZN to ensure safety and minimal disruption to traffic movement on Election Day.

The 688 officers will tackle unauthorised road closures, manage traffic congestion, ensure uninterrupted transportation of voting material, as well as general enforcement of traffic laws.

“Our dedicated officers will ensure there is safe and efficient movement of six million voters and election officials, who will travel to 5 028 voting stations.

“Critically, we made this deployment, fully aware that road rage and traffic-related altercations during election periods may escalate due to heightened political activities and contestation,” said KZN Transport MEC Siboniso Duma.

Duma appealed to motorists to be patient and slow down near voting stations amid expected heavy foot traffic.
