Alkantstrand dolosse memorial plaques must go

TNPA prepares for major construction work to upgrade the north and south breakwater structures

Memorial plaques erected on the dolosse at Alkantstrand have to be removed within 30 days.

This as Transnet National Ports Authority (TNPA) prepares for major construction work to upgrade the north and south breakwater structures in the Port of Richards Bay.

While this will no doubt be of great concern to those who must come forward and remove plaques for loved ones, this is by far not the biggest impact that will be felt by beachgoers.

Removal of damaged dolosses at the north pier, which terminates at the dolphin viewing platform, will mean some of the beach facilities cannot be accessed for the duration of the project.

Certain beach parking areas and the beach ablution facilities will be inaccessible for the duration of the project, scheduled to run from July 2026 to December 2028.

This will have a severe impact on tourism.
