No unauthorised drones permitted over Comrades Marathon route

KZN police to heighten law enforcement during the Comrades Marathon set to take place this weekend

The entire Comrades Marathon route has been declared a no-fly zone, and only authorised operational aircraft and drones will be permitted to fly.

This warning has been issued by police in KZN amid heightened law enforcement ahead of Sunday’s Ultimate Human Race.

“Any unauthorised drone will be taken down operationally in accordance with the law,” said the KZN Provincial Joint Operational and Intelligence Structure (PROVJOINTS) in a statement on Wednesday.

The SAPS has further warned that displaying banners depicting unsavoury or politically aligned messages on bridges, road signs and buildings ‘will be dealt with in compliance with municipal by-laws and other statutes’.

Over 21 000 runners are expected at this year’s marathon, taking place on Sunday, 14 June.

Spectators are also being warned to be vigilant at all times and be mindful of their surroundings during the event.

“During the 2025 Comrades Marathon, a few incidents of theft of motor vehicles and theft out of motor vehicles were reported during the course of the marathon,” said the PROVJOINTS.

“Police have identified hotspot areas and have deployed police officers accordingly, both uniformed and undercover.

“Various law enforcement units, amplified by private security and dedicated Comrades Marathon marshals, will be out in full force to ensure the 2026 Comrades Marathon becomes yet another successful world-class spectacle.”
