Smoother travel expected for commuters once Richards Bay Taxi and Bus Rank development is completed
Delays in infrastructure projects continue to impact the city’s residents, and municipal officials and service providers must find solutions to ensure projects are completed within set time frames.
This was the message delivered by City of uMhlathuze Mayor Xolani Ngwezi on Friday.

He was speaking at an oversight visit to the Richards Bay Taxi and Bus Rank, where inspections were carried out of the multi-million rand, state of the art facility set to be completed in the coming months.
The multi-model transport facility, which is housed in the heart of the Richards Bay CBD, has a mall, minibus and bus rank, and mechanical workshop. Phase two of the project is nearing completion.
Once completed, the facility will provide residents with safe, convenient and integrated taxi and bus transport services, improving mobility and supporting local economic growth.

The project was launched in 2019 with phase one, covering the minibus facility, which was completed at a cost of R24.8m.
Phase two, which amounts to R27m, covers buses. The facility will see buses and taxis separated to ensure ease of traffic flow.
Funds are being sourced to increase the access routes to ensure a smooth flow of traffic.
Ngwezi noted the threat of criminal activities in the nearby greenbelts and said solutions are being investigated to implement preventative measures.
“This facility has a direct link to our central industrial area. Phase one of that area is the community healthcare facility funded by South32, so there will be increased pedestrian flow between the public transport facility and the clinic. We have to look at pedestrian safety,” he said.
The mayor called for engagements and partnerships to ensure safety and security around the transport facility as well as the nearby substation, to safeguard infrastructure.
“We cannot leave these areas vulnerable,” he said.
“We have to look at how people are affected daily by transport delays. Finishing this project will help commuters who struggle with transport challenges daily, and will alleviate their frustrations.”
