Strong winds, extreme fire warning issued for KZN
KZN communities urged to exercise caution amid expected strong winds and fire warning
Strong winds are expected to impact parts of the northern and extreme southern parts of KZN this (Thursday) morning until the evening.
The areas that will be affected include Nkandla, Nongoma, Mthonjaneni, Big Five Hlabisa, Pongola and Ulundi.
The SA Weather Service (SAWS) said a passage of a cold front will result in winds that could reach about 70km/h to 80km/h over the affected areas.
Communities are urged to exercise extreme caution and to remain vigilant as these conditions could lead to runaway fires, reduced visibility due to dust storms and possible damage to infrastructure.
The SAWS also issued an extreme veld fire danger warning for parts of western KwaZulu-Natal today (Thursday).
The KZN Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (Cogta) has urged residents to avoid open fires, to report fires immediately, and to remain vigilant.
“Fire breaks are one of the most effective ways to combat veld fires, helping to slow or stop the spread of flames before they threaten lives, property and the environment.
“To strengthen wildfire prevention across the province, KZN Cogta is supporting municipalities in establishing and maintaining fire breaks within communities.
“Through this proactive approach, we are building safer, more resilient communities while reducing the devastating impact of veld fires.”
