High fire warning issued for Zululand region

South African Weather Service warns of extremely high fire conditions in several Zululand areas

Extremely high fire danger conditions are expected over parts of the Zululand region this (Monday) morning.

The SA Weather Service (SAWS) says dry, warm and windy conditions with gusts of up to 50 km/h are expected over the north-eastern areas, increasing the risk of development and rapid spread of fires.

The affected areas are: Big Five Hlabisa, Hluhluwe, Mtubatuba, Jozini, Nongoma, Pongola, uMhlabuyalingana and uMhlathuze.

Safety precautions:

* Don’t make fires in open areas or leave fires unattended.
* Don’t throw cigarette butts out of cars or in an open veld.
* Don’t throw bottles in the veld as they can magnify the sun’s rays and start fires
* Prepare and maintain fire breaks in a controlled manner.
* In case of a large fire, report it immediately and move away from the areas to allow professionals to deal with it.
* In cases where there is a shortage of water use sand to control the fire.
