Overnight closure of N2 – motorists take note
South African National Roads Agency (Sanral) announces temporary road closure on the N2 towards Durban this weekend
Motorists planning on travelling on the N2 towards Durban this weekend must plan their routes around the overnight closure of the national route.
The affected stretch of the N2 will be the southbound carriageway between the uMdloti and Mt Edgecombe interchanges, to allow for installation of overhead gantries.
The South African National Roads Agency (Sanral) made the announcement on Wednesday, with the closure taking effect from 7pm on Saturday, 11 July to 4am on Sunday, 12 July.
“Construction is getting to an advanced stage on the N2 and now requires installation of road sign gantries,” said Jason Lowe, Sanral KZN provincial specialist geometrics engineer.
“This closure is part of the ongoing upgrade process for the N2 between KwaMashu and uMdloti.”
The northbound carriageway will be unaffected and will remain open.
Sanral said signage, barriers and traffic calming are being installed ahead of the closure. Alternative routes are the M4 and R102 southbound.
“Please note that heavy motor vehicles cannot reach the N2 through uMhlanga (Armstrong Avenue/M41) due to the tight turns,” advised Sanral.
“Such vehicles must continue on the M4 towards Durban or detour via the R102. Note that the detours will significantly increase travel time.”
