KZN acting premier Thembeni KaMadlopha-Mthethwa has emphasised the importance of instilling a sense of pride, respect and strong family values among young women.

KaMadlopha-Mthethwa made this statement on behalf of the provincial government at the annual uMkhosi woMhlanga (Reed Dance), held at Emachobeni Royal Palace on Saturday.

Every September, as South Africa marks Heritage Month, thousands of maidens flock to the King’s Royal Palaces at eMachobeni (Ngwavuma) and eMashobeni (Pongola) to participate in uMkhosi woMhlanga, where they present their reeds as a symbol of purity and pride.

KaMadlopha-Mthethwa paid tribute to the founder of the Zulu nation, King Shaka kaSenzangakhona, and commended King Misuzulu kaZwelithini for continuing the rich legacy left by his forefathers of a strong, culturally-rooted Zulu nation.

“uMkhosi woMhlanga remains a cornerstone of our cultural heritage. It teaches our maidens’ dignity, self-respect and pride, while ensuring the family values that hold our society together. “We thank King Misuzulu kaZwelithini for preserving and promoting this rich legacy for future generations,” she said.

uMkhanyakude District Mayor Siphile Mdaka expressed heartfelt gratitude to King Misuzulu for his wise and steadfast leadership in safeguarding the customs and identity of the Zulu nation.

Mdaka humbly thanked Misuzulu for entrusting uMkhanyakude District with the honour of hosting this sacred ceremony of maidens.

He further pledged the district’s continued loyalty and unwavering support to the king and the royal household, committing that the municipality would always be at the service of the throne and the preservation of the rich cultural heritage.
