uMlalazi Arbor Month campaign launched

uMlalazi Municipality celebrated Heritage Day with the launch of the 2026 District Arbor Month campaign under the theme My Tree, My Oxygen, Plant Yours Today.

The campaign is run in partnership with the Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment, KZN Department of Economic Development, Tourism and Environmental Affairs, Richards Bay Industrial Development Zone and Grindrod.

The programme began with a symbolic tree planting at eThafeni Temple next to uMfolozi College and at Sphilele Clinic in Ward 10, before the main event which was held at the KwaMfana community hall in Ward 12.

Addressing members of the community, uMlalazi Mayor Queen Xulu said the campaign is a vital platform to raise awareness about the critical role of trees and forests in supporting healthy, resilient and sustainable communities.

She said the launch marks an important step towards the national One Billion Trees campaign, which aims to plant 10 million trees.

Xulu further said her municipality celebrates under the theme of Celebrating Our Living Cultural Heritage.

“Strengthening the ties that bind us, trees must be seen as part of our living heritage, and that planting a tree is an act of hope and a gift to future generations,” she said.
