Businesses can adopt a spot to beautify Empangeni CBD
Businesses encouraged to Adopt a Spot as part of long-term effort to restore greenery and improve the appearance of Empangeni
Businesses need to step forward and play a role in beautifying Empangeni’s CBD.
Green Chapter Foundation has earmarked Maxwell Street as the starting point for its newly launched Adopt a Spot campaign.
On Friday, Khulanathi Forestry members, led by CEO Thokozani Mfekayi, came on board, planting palm trees to demonstrate what can be achieved when the private sector takes an active interest in the environment in which it operates.
Green Chapter Foundation founder Mpendulo Mbulawa said businesses should not stand on the sidelines while the CBD deteriorates.
“We encourage companies operating in and benefitting from Empangeni, to identify sections of Maxwell Street and other strategic areas that they can adopt and support through landscaping, tree planting, maintenance and other beautification interventions.
“Maxwell Street has been selected as an important starting point because of its significance within Empangeni. The planting of trees is intended to form part of a longer-term effort to restore greenery and improve the appearance of the area,” said Mbulawa.
“Khulanathi Forestry has made the first move. The challenge now goes to the rest of the Empangeni business community.”
Ward 23 Councillor Andre de Lange encouraged support for the initiative, demonstrating his support on the day.
“Rather than replacing the responsibilities of the municipality, the Adopt a Spot approach seeks to demonstrate what can happen when communities, businesses and local government work alongside one another,” he said.
