Monster mamba removed from Empangeni house
Local snake catcher Robbie Ferreira captures 2.6kg black mamba in Empangeni
A black mamba weighing 2.6kg and measuring 2.5m was safely captured and relocated from a house in Empangeni.
Local snake catcher Robbie Ferreira took the call early on Monday morning, for what turned out to be ‘an easy catch’.
“The snake was at a house in Moberly Street, next to the green belt. When I arrived, the homeowners said it was a ‘big, brown snake’ and was in a box in the garage,” said Ferreira.
“We don’t often get black mambas in Empangeni, but they do occur in the green belts.
“The homeowners also have rabbits in their garden behind the garage, which was the attraction. There was food and shelter, which is all the snake wants.”
Ferreira took the mamba to Snake Pharm in Hluhluwe, where it will contribute to Donald Schultz’s anti-venom research.
