NOTICE OF THE CONSTRUCTION WORKS FOR THE UPGRADE OF BREAKWATERS PROJECT AND CLOSURE OF THE ALKANTSTRAND BEACH FACILITIES AT UMHLATHUZE LOCAL MUNICIPALITY, KWAZULU NATAL PROJECT LOCATION
Transnet National Ports Authority (TNPA) proposes the construction of the marine works for the upgrade of the North and South Breakwater (new dolosse) Structures in the Port of Richards Bay, uMhlathuze Local Municipality, KwaZulu Natal. The South Breakwater is located in the southern side within the Port, whereas the North Breakwater is located in the northern side, at the Alkantstrand Beach.
BRIEF PROJECT BACKGROUND & DESCRIPTION
The breakwater structures were designed and built as rubble mound structures that are protected by dolosse armour units. These structures belong to TNPA for safe navigation of vessels into the Port. The project entails repairing and upgrading to sections of the North and South Breakwater Structures, the damaged dolos units will be removed. This work is required in order for TNPA to continue to provide safe access for the vessels into the Port of Richards Bay. During the execution of the works in the North Breakwater Structure, some of the beach facilities cannot be accessed for the duration of the project.
PUBLIC PARTICIPATION
i. A portion of the dolosses located at the North Breakwater Structure of Alkantstrand Beach are attached with the memorial plaques. The families responsible for the memorial plaques are urged to come forward and remove the plaques on the dolosse. If the plaques are not removed within the 30 days of this notice, TNPA will relocate the affected plaques to the existing concrete wall, on the pier.
ii. Some of the beach parking areas and the beach ablution facilities will be inaccessible for the duration of the project (July 2026 to December 2028). For further information, please contact the person below:
