SCHOOL is finished! Another Monday goes by and there’s nothing to do.
What is there to do? Well…
About six years ago, a research project named ‘Teens Talk’ took the initiative in finding out exactly what the social, emotional, spiritual and physical concerns of local youth were in an attempt to address these various needs.
In August 2009, Crossroads Teen Centre opened its doors to the youth of our community hoping to provide a practical solution for the needs of teenagers with the prospect of reaching out to the outskirts of the Empangeni area.
Today, Crossroads resides in Norman Tedder Lane, Empangeni and has enough space and activities to accommodate well over 70 people.
Consisting of 14 rooms, three toilets and a kitchenette, there is plenty of space for teenagers to participate in educational activities, painting, fitness programs, crafts and biblical studies.
‘By participating in the activities the teens can earn points which can then be used as credit at the tuck-shop,’ said centre manager, Nici Hornby.
Educational
Crossroads takes pride in their work which is founded on Christian values. As a non-profit organisation, the aim is to provide free social and educational activities to the youth of our community in a safe and stable environment whilst encouraging interest in local upliftment programmes. Teens can attend the centre every day after school with the opportunity of participating in numerous upliftment programms at the weekends or in the holiday period.
‘We try to relate to the kids, because we understand what they are going through,’ said centre assistant Bennie Mthembu.
Hailing from a difficult background, Bennie said the importance of reaching out to those in our community cannot be overlooked as organising events for this very purpose play a vital role in helping those who are less fortunate.
One such event was the Treasure Hunters Day Care programme held at Mevamhlophe recently, which provided entertainment and toys for the kiddies at the crèche.
The various outreach programmes which Crossroads have been responsible for have made a major impact on the lives of all who are involved.
Later this month, Crossroads will be hosting an all-girls camp aimed at empowering young women.
