DRIVING to work recently I noted two trolley pushers, arms strapped behind their backs awaiting police transportation.

This got me thinking – it’s a hard life and people are hungry, some do it out of greed and some because they believe there is no other way.

Driving through Alton I often have to swerve to avoid these trolley pushers, they, on the other hand, are oblivious to the traffic.

When done delivering their daily collections they often dump their trolleys at the scrapyards or on the side of the road.

Dollar Drive is a perfect example of the nuisance these trolleys cause.

I have a friend who is a business owner. Every day without fail he has to remove trolleys from his premises to make it presentable and accessible for his clients.

I for one question the statement that we are the cleanest city, how can we be when the business hub is scattered with these trolleys and the junk collected in them.

Can the scrap yards, who sometimes pay these people to collect junk, not make a designated parking spot for these pushers to leave their trolleys outside their businesses?

Furthermore, the trolleys themselves are stolen property from the retailers. Surely, these scrapyards have enough scrap to build trolleys for these very people they hire?

We have become a rather paranoid nation. If I see a trolley in front of my house I believe it’s marked as the next house to be robbed.

Can our city not make a plan, are the scrap yards willing to accommodate spaces to assist in keeping our streets clear and business owners and trolley pushers safe and happy?

Can there be a happy medium for all?
