I would like to take a minute to honour our emergency services, and to thank them for the work they do. Late at night, on 22 May, my friend and I were victims of a terrible car accident – I being the driver and him the passenger.
We both came out of it with our lives, thanks to the seat belts we were wearing, but also thanks to the staff of KZN Emergency Medical Services (EMS) and the fire department of Empangeni, whose members used the ‘jaws of life’ to free us.
As I sat on the side of the road watching the two teams move together with effective efficiency, they rescued my friend out of our car and proceeded, in exceptional transition, to rescue the passengers of the other vehicle with which ours collided.
In this regard, I would like to fly high the flag of our emergency services – KZN EMS – as well as the Empangeni Fire Department.
I further encourage motorists to continue to comply with emergency vehicles by allowing them to pass through to attend to emergencies wherever they happen.
In the same spirit, I further encourage and also applaud our people by calling the emergency services for those in need, because doing that saves lives.
I salute the men and women who work through the night, throughout the year, readily responding to duties in this outstanding manner.
